For my birthday last month I wanted to try a trendy bar spot with a reputation for good eats. I'd heard about Tasty N Alder and read a couple of rave reviews on popular happy hour sites, so I decided to spend some of my birthday hanging out there. I was not disappointed. The ambiance is hip and sophisticated, the price is right, and the food is damn good.
First things first, I ordered my bad self the Alder Club Cocktail. It's gin, combier, maraschino, angostura, and lime - refreshing and tart, perfect.
Next came the serious business, this is the Steakhouse sandwich with fried onions and horseradish mayo. So amazing.
Next we ordered the Gibbs bowl, a kind of Tex-Mex snack with pinto beans, pork, rice, avocado, and tortillas. A little spicy, a little salty.
Any time there's fries on a menu that are fried in animal fat I'm in. These are their fries fried in Wagyu tallow, that's high quality beef fat.
What's that? More fried things? Ummm yes please. Hush puppies with jalapeno butter. The hush puppies are sweet and light and the butter is spicy. I'm often disappointed by hush puppies, but not these. These are easily the best I've ever had.
And of course, I wasn't leaving without eating some fried chicken. Again, I am frequently disappointed by fried chicken. There are so many terrible shake and bake, dry, burnt, and overly greasy pieces of chicken masquerading as legitimate fried chicken all across pdx, but not here. This is some great fried chicken.
I'm glad I started my birthday evening with a happy hour at Tasty N Alder it was delicious. A great way to start my first day as a 27 year old!
